Absolutely not, as long as two crucial rules are followed: proper weight distribution by the stylist during braiding and timely removal (do not wear the style longer than recommended). On the contrary, under kanekalon, your natural hair gets a break from daily styling, flat irons, curling rods, and hot blow dryers.
The duration depends on the type of braiding and the chosen method:
It is not recommended to wear the hairstyle longer than advised, as the overgrown roots will start to tangle, making them harder to undo later.
Please arrive with completely clean and thoroughly dried hair. Wash your hair the evening before your appointment strictly with shampoo (preferably a deep-cleansing one), without using any masks, balms, oils, or conditioners — these products make the hair too slippery, causing the braids to slide out.
For hairstyles on a braided base (crochet styles) and classic cornrows, your natural hair should be at least 7-10 cm long (roughly shoulder-length or slightly above). The shorter the hair, the harder it is to blend with kanekalon. For very short haircuts, it is best to send a photo of your hair to the stylist beforehand via Instagram or Telegram for a quick consultation.
You can wash your braids once every 7–10 days. Dilute regular shampoo with water in a 1:5 ratio, lather it with a sponge, and gently apply the foam strictly to the partings (your scalp). Do not rub the length of the braids — the running soapy water is enough. Pat dry with a towel and let them air dry only.
During the first 2-3 days, your scalp may feel tight — this is a normal adaptation to the unfamiliar weight. If you experience mild itching or irritation from the tension, do not scratch it with your nails. Simply treat the partings with any alcohol-free antiseptic (like Octenisept or Asept) or a panthenol foam. All discomfort will completely disappear within a couple of days.
