Absolutely not, if two key rules are followed: proper weight distribution by the stylist during braiding and timely removal of the hairstyle (not wearing it longer than recommended). On the contrary — under synthetic hair, your natural hair gets a rest from daily styling, flat irons, curling irons and hot blow-dry air.
The wearing time depends on the type of weave and the chosen method (e.g. synthetic braids):
- Ponytail braids / large patterns (cornrows): from 1 to 3 weeks.
- Classic afro braids / SE braids / Zizi: from 1 to 1.5 months.
- Sphinx / braids all over the head: from 3 to 4 weeks.
It is not recommended to wear the hairstyle longer than indicated, because hair regrowing at the roots begins to tangle, which makes unbraiding harder later.
Come to your appointment with completely clean and thoroughly dried hair. Wash your hair the evening before the appointment using only shampoo (preferably deep cleansing), without masks, balms, oils or conditioners. These products make the hair too slippery, so the braids may slide off.
For cornrow-based styles and classic braids, your natural hair should be around 7–10 cm long. The shorter the hair, the harder it is to cover it neatly with kanekalon. For very short haircuts or planned dreadlocks, it is best to send a photo of your hair in a private message beforehand for a consultation.
Braids and afro styles are washed once every 7–10 days. Dilute regular shampoo with water in a 1:5 ratio, whip it into foam with a sponge and gently apply the foam only to the partings (scalp). You don't need to scrub the braids along their length — the shampoo water running down is enough. After washing, press out excess water with a towel and let the hairstyle dry naturally.
For the first 2–3 days you may feel some scalp tension — this is a completely normal reaction to the new weight of the hairstyle. If mild itching or irritation appears, do not scratch your skin with your nails under any circumstances. First wipe the partings with a cotton pad soaked in one of these: Octenisept, Asept, Borasol or chamomile infusion, then apply Alantan Plus or Sudocrem cream. All discomfort disappears completely after a few days.
